Highlights

Overview

The Tsum Valley is one of the world's most remote and mysterious Himalayan valley restricted regions until 2008, which opened recently. The hidden secret Tibetan Buddhist land lies at the edge of one of the most secluded Himalayan valleys on the northern part of Manaslu. The Tsum Valley trek takes you into the majestic surroundings of the Sringi Himal, Ganesh Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges. This region is similar to Tibet, but completely different from what you will find elsewhere. The inhabitants of Tsum Valley, or Tsumbas, are of Tibetan origin, with their own ancient form of dialect, art, culture, and religion. They used to be an important trade link with Tibet.

In the beginning, we trek to the Manaslu Trek route, or the Manaslu Circuit Trek, which is still less exposed and relatively virgin in comparison to other trekking regions. The inhabitants of Tsum Valley still maintain their polyandry practice with their own way of life, which may be quite surprising for many travelers.

This trail starts with an eight-hour drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola. At the beginning, the trek ascends to the Budhi Gandaki Valley on good paths through a mix of dense forest, terraced fields, and hilly villages. Once we leave the main Manaslu Trail for the Tsum valley, suddenly we get a feeling of entering truly into the hidden valley. While on the trek, we also pass through the glacial rivers, alpine forests, and villages of the warm hospitality of ethnic Tsumba people in the lower part of the Buri Gandaki regions of Liding, Machha Khola, Jagat, and Philim. On the trail, we will visit the ancient Mu Gompa, Dephyudonma Gompa, and Rachen Gompa of the region.
