Highlights

Overview

The Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek with the ascent of Island Peak begins with a thirty-minute scenic birds-eye view flight paralleled with the soaring white Himalayan Mountains. We will land at Lukla Tenzing-Hilary airport. Upon arrival, we will meet our crew and start our trail and trek up the Dudh Kosi Valley, surrounded by the massive Thamserku (6623m) and Kusum Kanguru (6367m). Kusum Kanguru means "Three Snow-White Gods" in the Sherpa language, which refers to the triple summit of the mountain. Island Peak is also known in Tibetan as Imja Tse.

At the beginning, the trail leads us through beautiful villages rich in Tibetan culture and traditions, such as Namche Bazaar, where we have time to acclimatize. Then we gradually head higher altitudes to Tengboche (3860m), Dingboche (4350 m), Lobuche (4910 m), Gorak Shep (5170 m/16,961ft), Everest Base Camp (5364 m), and climb to Kala Patthar (5545 m), where we will have time to acclimatize for our climbing of Island Peak. From here, we have excellent views of Mt. Everest and other peaks.
Later on, we head back to Chukhung (4730m); here we will have ample time to get acclimatized beforehand, then start our journey to Island Peak base camp (5200m) and ultimately Island Peak summit (6189m). Afterwards, we descend to Pangboche (3985m), Namche Bazaar (3440m), and back to Lukla (2800m) to catch our flight to Kathmandu. On our last day in Kathmandu, we will explore some of the most important historical cities in the Kathmandu Valley.

Island Peak, a classic trekking peak of Nepal
Island Peak is located in Sagarmatha National Park, in the Everest area. The peak was named in 1951 by a team led by Eric Shipton, as it looked like an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche, a town at 4,410m. The peak was later renamed in 1983 to Imja Tse, but is still popularly known as Island Peak. Island Peak was first climbed in 1953 as part of training for a British expedition aiming for Everest.

Climbing Island Peak is one of the easy activities to reach the summit of six thousand (higher than Kilimanjaro). You don't need much previous experience, since it is not very technical, but you do need to be in good physical shape and have used the basic winter equipment, crampons and ice axe. Likewise, knowing rappelling techniques is appreciated. Before the ascent we explain all this, to have it clear and fresh, through the mountaineering course that we offer in the camps.

Acclimatization trek through the beautiful Khumbu Valley
Before the ascent, the acclimatization trek is carried out to the Everest base camp. The trekking days are very pleasant and offer magnificent views of the Sherpa villages, their houses with their different colored roofs, the prayer flags, and the Buddhist monasteries. Likewise, the excursion gives you the possibility of discovering the culture of the people of the Solu Khumbu valley.

The itinerary includes the ascent of Kala Patthar 5,550 m, a small rocky peak that offers wonderful views of Pumori, Lhotse, Nuptse and Everest. The ascent to Island Peak begins in Lukla, the capital of the Sherpa people which is approx. 30 minutes by plane from Kathmandu. There is the possibility of doing a circular route going up the Gokyo Valley , crossing the high Cho La pass and returning along the normal route.

Ascension
In most cases, only the base camp is formed, which is located right at Lake Imja Tse at an altitude of 5,100 m. If necessary, an intermediate camp is set up at the height of the glacier. If in the first part of the climb you only have to walk, in the second things change. You have to put on the crampons, the harness and be very careful. The glacier begins at about 5,800 m. Along the glacier there are several sections secured with fixed ropes and ladders. The last section is a fairly sharp ridge with snow and ice slopes of a maximum of 45º that is equipped with fixed ropes to facilitate the ascent and descent of mountaineers.

The summit of Island Peak has stunning views of the area, among the highlights you can see Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Ama Dablam , Baruntse , Cholatse, Kantega and Mera . The ascent of Island Peak is very similar to the ascent of Lobuche , or Fachermo, and they are the most desired activities for mountaineers who want to start mountaineering in the Himalayas.
